Art Trail 2016 -  2nd July to 9th July

Displays of artwork, pottery, photographs, ceramics, clay sculpture and silver jewellery at venues around the village

Hockley's third Art Trail took place in early July. As it has become popular we were asked to extend the event this year and thirty local artists exhibited various forms of artwork at 28 venues in the village centre. The Trail was free to visitors and a programme with trail map was available indicating venues and artists.  Those taking part were pleased that the event had attracted visitors into Hockley and we received many requests to hold the exhibition again in 2017. Our Trail was also featured in the Essex Summer of Arts booklet and the local media. The Parish Council appreciates the enthusiastic co-operation of all the venues and artists in the community which contributes to the success of this event.

I was pleased to be asked to represent Hockley Parish Council at the official Launch of the Essex Summer of Art held in the Hardy Amies Design Centre at Brentwood School.   Essex Summer of Art is an ambitious countywide visual art festival running from June-October 2016. This is a partnership project between 25 individual Art Trails across Essex, Visit Essex, participating District and Unitary Councils and Essex County Council. Not having been directly involved in the project before I was pleasantly surprised at the interest the Trails are attracting during the summer across Essex enabling local artists to display and sell their work, with the added benefit of encouraging more footfall in local communities where the artwork is displayed.   Hockley’s Art Trail is now included in the official Festival Brochure along with Rochford and Rayleigh from our District.  The Trails are largely organised by volunteers from the various organisations and our Art Trail Working Group, Cllrs. Gleadall, Randall and Martin are finalising the event for Hockley. The Event Programmes are now available from the parish office, library and participating venues and posters will be displayed shortly. I would encourage you to walk the Trail to support the event.

Cllr Roy Martin, Chairman Hockley Parish Council

In September 2015 the Parish Council was delighted to receive an award from the Essex Association of Local Councils for developing the new Art Trail in Hockley.

The 2015 Art Trail in July again saw diverse forms of artwork exhibited in venues in the village centre which included oil, acrylics, watercolours, photography, ceramics, clay sculptures, decorative glass, pyrography and woodcarving. Although many venues in Hockley have limited space, the artists made the most of the available area to display their work. Artists ranged from experienced exhibitors to students, some selling their artwork while others were just pleased to have the opportunity to display their work. In some venues, artists demonstrated their skills throughout the event.  This year the event was included in the Essex Summer of Art Brochure which advertises all the art trails and exhibitions throughout Essex and hopefully attracts visitors from outside the parish. Feedback was very positive, and the council has been asked to extend the period of display next year. We hope that with the continued support from artists, businesses and residents the Art Trail will become an established event in Hockley.

Councillors with the Chairman of Rochford District Council who was invited to visit the Art Trail on the opening morning.

In June 2014 Hockley hosted its first Art Trail which was held over 3 days. Local artists exhibited their work at around 30 venues in the village which attracted many visitors. Programmes, indicating venues, art forms and artists, were available allowing viewers to follow the trail. The organisers, businesses and visitors were amazed at the quality of local talent available. The Parish Council was delighted with the support for this new venture and have received requests to hold the event again in 2015.

Greensward Academy Art Department exhibited their work at Kilnfield House.
