Hockley Art Trail 2018

Hockley Parish Council held its 5th Art Trail in July when local artists exhibited their work in shops and businesses in the village centre.

Hockley’s Art Trail forms part of the Essex Summer of Art and this year Greensward Academy ‘A’ Level exam work was included along with many exhibits from an Open Arts charitable project which provides an opportunity for mental health patients to fulfil arts and crafts activities.

An example of bottletop art was created at the Children's Workshop

The Chairman of Rochford District Council was invited to tour the Art Trail and visited the Greensward Academy exhibits at Hockley Library.

The Art Trails in Essex are supported by the Essex Summer of Art which this year was launched by Essex County Council on the 26th June 2017 at Burnham on Crouch and our Art Trail features in their brochure. The Parish Chairman and councillors on the Art Trail Working Group were invited to attend and tour venues in Burnham. We were able to promote HockleyTrail and exchange experiences with other Art Trail organisers to bring back some new ideas for our Trail.  This year we incorporated an Art Workshop to encourage artististic talents in our youngsters.

  • During the week two of our local artists Emma Griffiths and Trisha Poxon were selected by the Head of Art from Greensward Academy to be considered for inclusion by Essex Summer of Art at their 10 year celebration event in 2018                               .
  • In the 4 years of running the Hockley Art Trail, over 60 local artists have had the opportunity to exhibit their work, some for a hobby and some to sell.

Rochford District Council Chairman Cllr Lesley Butcher and Vice Chairman Cllr David Merrick have accepted an invitation to visit the Art Trail Venues and the Village Market in Hockley on Saturday 8th July. We look forward to welcoming them and appreciate their support for this event which is growing in popularity with both the artists and the community.

Hockley Parish Council has organised its 4th Hockley Art Trail between 1st and 8th July, where shops and businesses in Hockley town centre will be exhibiting various forms of art. The Trail provides local artists with the opportunity to display a variety of artwork, and will include visual art, photography, ceramics, decorative glass, and jewellery. It will be possible to purchase the art work at many of the venues.

This year there is an added attraction where we will be holding art workshops on 1st July, primarily for children, in morning (9:00-12:00) and afternoon sessions (1:00-4:00) at the Old Fire Station. Entry to the event is free.

An event programme and trail map, providing details of artists, art forms and venues, can be obtained from participating exhibitors, local shops, Hockley Library and Hockley Parish Council office. Numbered logos will be displayed in the windows of all participating venues, so why not drop in to support your local artists and your local businesses.

Hockley Art Trail is featured in the Essex Summer of Arts booklet which highlights all of the art trails and exhibitions in Essex. Booklets will be available at participating venues.

Further details can be obtained from Councillors Tim Gleadall (01702 201688), Veronica Randall (01702 202142) or Sue Martin (01702 202750).

Art Trail 2016 -  2nd July to 9th July

Displays of artwork, pottery, photographs, ceramics, clay sculpture and silver jewellery at venues around the village

Hockley's third Art Trail took place in early July. As it has become popular we were asked to extend the event this year and thirty local artists exhibited various forms of artwork at 28 venues in the village centre. The Trail was free to visitors and a programme with trail map was available indicating venues and artists.  Those taking part were pleased that the event had attracted visitors into Hockley and we received many requests to hold the exhibition again in 2017. Our Trail was also featured in the Essex Summer of Arts booklet and the local media. The Parish Council appreciates the enthusiastic co-operation of all the venues and artists in the community which contributes to the success of this event.

"I was pleased to be asked to represent Hockley Parish Council at the official Launch of the Essex Summer of Art held in the Hardy Amies Design Centre at Brentwood School.   Essex Summer of Art is an ambitious countywide visual art festival running from June-October 2016. This is a partnership project between 25 individual Art Trails across Essex, Visit Essex, participating District and Unitary Councils and Essex County Council. Not having been directly involved in the project before I was pleasantly surprised at the interest the Trails are attracting during the summer across Essex enabling local artists to display and sell their work, with the added benefit of encouraging more footfall in local communities where the artwork is displayed.   Hockley’s Art Trail is now included in the official Festival Brochure along with Rochford and Rayleigh from our District.  The Trails are largely organised by volunteers from the various organisations and our Art Trail Working Group, Cllrs. Gleadall, Randall and Martin are finalising the event for Hockley. The Event Programmes are now available from the parish office, library and participating venues and posters will be displayed shortly. I would encourage you to walk the Trail to support the event."

Cllr Roy Martin, Chairman Hockley Parish Council

In September 2015 the Parish Council was delighted to receive an award from the Essex Association of Local Councils for developing the new Art Trail in Hockley.

The 2015 Hockley Art Trail in July again saw diverse forms of artwork exhibited in venues in the village centre which included oil, acrylics, watercolours, photography, ceramics, clay sculptures, decorative glass, pyrography and woodcarving. Although many venues in Hockley have limited space, the artists made the most of the available area to display their work. Artists ranged from experienced exhibitors to students, some selling their artwork while others were just pleased to have the opportunity to display their work. In some venues, artists demonstrated their skills throughout the event.  This year the event was included in the Essex Summer of Art Brochure which advertises all the art trails and exhibitions throughout Essex and hopefully attracts visitors from outside the parish. Feedback was very positive, and the council has been asked to extend the period of display next year. We hope that with the continued support from artists, businesses and residents the Art Trail will become an established event in Hockley.

In June 2014 Hockley Parish Council hosted its first Art Trail in the village which was held over 3 days. Local artists exhibited their work at around 30 venues in the village which attracted many visitors. Programmes, indicating venues, art forms and artists, were available allowing viewers to follow the trail. The organisers, businesses and visitors were amazed at the quality of local talent available. The Parish Council was delighted with the support for this new venture and have received requests to hold the event again in 2015.

Greensward Academy Art Department exhibited their work at Kilnfield House.
